GENERAL INFORMATION

Endovenous Laser Ablation is an outpatient procedure to seal the refluxing saphenous vein in your leg. Faulty valves within the saphenous vein cause reverse flow (reflux) of blood in your leg veins, causing leg swelling, pain, and/or varicose veins.

If you have varicose veins (bulging or ropey veins), you may have also had a procedure called microphlebectomy (removal of the varicose vein). Tiny incisions are made along the course of the varicose veins and small segments of the vein are removed. The incisions are approximately 1/4 inch in length and do not require stitches.

After several months, the saphenous vein will be absorbed into the body and disappear. If you have any remaining bulging varicose veins after your procedure, we will inject them with a sclerosing medicine to seal them shut at a follow-up visit. The risk of recurrent varicose veins is very low, less than 3%.

The following information is what you can expect during the recovery period.
